This combo is very dynamic and 'fast' sounding (much like the TAD 4001 but with wider range and more "life-like mids) yet doesn't have the fatique I hear with all the compression drivers I have tried to live with. i could not agree more !!!! http://www.madisound.com/pdf/audax/pr170m0.pdf http://www.audax.fr/forum/read.php?4,1119,3561 http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=74655 I can see why Magnetar likes the PR170MO. Even without any fine tuning, my prototype system sounded surprisingly good, with quite impressive clarity and dynamics, and the sound has sufficient fullness and warmth instead of being thin or hollow. The PR170MO on open baffle clearly has the potential to be part of a great sounding system. Actually, I was so encouraged by the sound I got that this morning I ordered another PR170MO for use in a center channel of a multichannel system. To my ears, the Audax PR170MO is among the most satisfying drivers I've tried. the PR170MO is so good that I've decided to build a home theater surround sound system based on this driver. Just for audio history's sake, the AUDAX PR170M0 driver has been used as the replacement mid of the Speakerlab K-Horn, replacing a reasonably good SpeakerLab phenolic/compression unit, according to my old catalogs and other info I've come upon. the Audax driver was the unit of choice for the $40,000 Jadis Eurythmie horn hybrid that bridged the range from 190 Hz - 900 Hz http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread/t-60289.html Take a look or listen to these JBL 2123H . At least on paper they they make the Accuton look like a toy. In the systems I've built with them I find little fault. Compared to the the PHL 3451 the PHL 3451 is nasal and peaky (fatique, colorations) and has a problem finding 300 cycles- The smaller PHLs and Audax's need to be used in pairs to compete with the lack of compression exhibited by the larger 10" beasts - and the smaller drivers never really sound totally real even when biamped and driven with a good high powered amp. A pair of PR170MO's can sound really nice out to 2.5-3k if they are spaced very tightly. What really surprised me was how much better the closely spaced pair sounds compared to single - the dynamics and 'ease' with the pair is right up there with a good compression drive - but less agressive and zero horn colorations. I'm weaning off JBL compression drivers. IOW the Audax pair even when ran up high is still distinctly superior in smoothness and tone over the 2440's I am used to and also has the dynamic/presence character I like. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=106906 http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=78791 I'll be using the C21F with 2 Audax PR170M0s on an open baffle setup that Magnetar Labs cooked up. I think it's really outstanding, damn shame the 170 is discontinued. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=76404 http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=68090 http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=79585 ![]() Mid-range crisis - whats kool drivers for cone-driven horns? http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=72835 cones get complaints of "being slow" - sometimes think 'some' of this is due to tweeter. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=9355 I have the 6 1/2 inch Audax Pro Aerogels which (with the possible exception of the PHL mids) are about the best you can get (and don't cost a lot either). http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=47743 An absolute classic is the Audax PR170M0. Sounds great. Best off crossed over around 250Hz on a large baffle or better in a short waveguide. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=23133 The PR170M0 is best operated in a moddest sealed chamber (around 3 - 4 Liter) having an iregular profile. I would STRONGLY recommend to load the front of the Driver into a spherical wave waveguide (Horn) of around 15" Diameter to control directivity. Under such conditions a crossover frequency of around 250Hz is possible. The Woofer section shoudl ideally be dipolar or allow some form of equalisation for room modes to be applied. The driver really is an excellent match for a folded bass horn below it that will often get hairy sounding above 250-300 cycles. This is in a system with an Altec 515 below it, the best 15 I've ever heard in this range. The Audax is just as warm as the Altec but has better definition and presence and realism. Very nice sounding little driver in a horn IMHO. C37 should be quite a boost for the PR170M0.... http://www.ennemoser.com/th8.html http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?...dax+PR170M0&r= http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?...dax+PR170M0&r= If you like orchestral music and big wide dynamic sound, I'd say go for the Audax system. http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?...dax+PR170M0&r= http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?...dax+PR170M0&r= http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=74655 http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=36401 The 150Hz tractrix horn looks like oris150 but is much heavier. I use it from 150Hz to 2500Hz with the 6'' Audax PR170M0. http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=hug&m=85381 |

http://www.caraudioforum.com/vbb3/sh...d.php?t=191130 Here is the picture of the right speaker (that's my dad in the picture, he made the towers himself as I was busy with work, however I picked the drive units with the advice of many people including Thylantyr). http://members.shaw.ca/lcleven/right...r_with_dad.jpg 2 x PHL 1240 midrange (6.5") 1 x RAVEN R2 ribon tweeter 1 x Lambda Acoustics TD12X (12") ![]() |
